Research Abstract

In the small intestine, the brush-border NaィイD1+ィエD1/glucose cotransporters (SGLT-1) play a major role in the absorption of glucose . The objectives of this experiment were to investigate the developmental changes of the intestinal function for glucose absorption and to recognize the assay for SGLT-1 in new born calves. The SGLT-1mRNA was determined by Northern blot analysis . The mucosal SGLT-1mRNA levels were lower in duodenum and gradually increased in proximal intestine before weaning calves. After normal weaning at 5 weeks old , the expression of SGLT-1 in the small intestine was not different between the location of intestine. Changes in α-glucosidase and β-galactosidase activities in the small intestine were also determined. α-glucosidase activity was lower in suckling calves than that of weaned calves , but β-galactosidase activity remained constant during these period.
