Research Abstract

These are few reports concerning the EEG recording while the patients is undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Three problems confront the EEG recording during MRI. First, the strong and rapidly changing radio-frequency fields coupled with the large static magnetic field may induce significant current flow within the electrodes and wires, resulting in localized heating and burning. Second, the EEG may significantly interfere with the quality of the MRI images. Third, the quality of EEG may be significantly compromised. Careful arrangement in geometry of multiplexed EEG wires and changing the electrode shape enabled to eliminate serious EEG artifacts without interfering with the excellent quality of the functional MRI. This development never caused localized heating or burning. This technical development may permit the EEG-gated functional MRI and diffusion-weighted MRI for detection of the epileptic focus during interictal period in future.
