Research Abstract

Tonsillar application is a new immunization method for inducing a specific antibody against antigen in saliva and blood plasma. We tonsillarly applied formalin-killed cells of Porphyromonas gingivaris (P.gingivalis), a periodontopathic bacteria, and obtained following results.
1. Tosillar application of killed P. gingivalis induced anti-P. gingivalis IgA in saliva and anti-P. gingivalis IgG in blood plasma.
2. A number of anti-P. gingivalis IgA produsing cells increased in the tissue surrounding parotid gland by tonsillar application.
3. Induced salivary IgA reacted against P. gingivalis both the applied strain and other several kind of the different strain. The reactions to Prevotella intermedia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Streptococcus sanguis were very low level.
4. Induced salivary IgA inhibited the adherence of P. gingivalis to the cloned cells of gingival epithelial cell in vitro.
These results shows that tonsillar application by killed cell of P. gingivalis induced antigen specific antibody in saliva. Since the induced antibody inhibited the adherence of P. gingivalis to gingival epithelial cells, it is suggested that tonsillar application of the periodontpathic bacterial cells is possible to prevent periodontal disease.
