| Research Abstract |
We investigated characteristic of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and immunological function after the Kagoshima Northwestern Earthquake and the avalanche of earth and rocks in Izumi city. Students of 10.2% in elementary, junior and senior high schools were suffered from PTSD according to the DSM-IV questionnaire. The rate of the disease gradually decreased with elapsed time. The rate in adults was higher than in the students. The incidence rate of PTSD remained high (about 20%) 2 years after the avalanche.
Sixteen subjects were examined for cellular immunological function by measuring CD4, CD8, CD56, and NKCC. The lower NKCC (<-2SD of normal controls) was observed in three subjects, higher than controls by 7.5 times. The higher level of CD4, CD8, and CD56 were observed, and the levels of CD8 and CD56 were positively associated with the degree of anxiety. However, the lower NKCC and higher CD4, CD8, and CD56 did not correlate with the occurrence of PTSD. The NKCC increased with elapsed time in the three subjects. In contrast, the other parameters decreased. Subjects for the first time talked their suppressed experiences to the counsellor when they were explained about their immunological function. Physical examination including immuological function may be useful for counselling of subjects who unpredictably encountered the disaster.
