Research Abstract |
We investigated the role of communication in teaching English, Japanese and mathematics to deaf and hard-of-hearing students. As for teaching English, using signs to express English words as a means of communication for classwork was proposed, and what kind of signs should be introduced to the classrooms of deaf Japanese students was discussed. Choosing and dealing with a variety of academic materials for such classrooms were also discussed. As for teaching Japanese, how to deal with current issues in the teaching if Japanese was discussed specifically from the standpoint of educating the deaf. The writing competence of deaf students was discussed. As for teaching mathematics, we discussed the role of communication in changing the viewpoint of deaf and hard-of-hearing students, away from a basal condition to form mathematical knowledge, and instead toward authentic mathematical view. The role of communication in every subject should be investigated further, and finding practical ways to communicate effectively remains the problem to be solved.
