Research Abstract

Noninvasive three-point bending loads of several distinctive waveforms were applied onto the tibias of young growing rats, and newly formed bones were labeled and observed by light microscopy, The locations of the woven bone formation were shown to be dependent on the waveforms of loads. Examination of the relations between the strains generated by the loads of respective waveforms and the locations of the woven bone formation revealed that the significantly greater amounts of woven bones were formed on the surfaces where dynamic compressive strains were generated.
Furthermore, canine radius after the osteotomy of the ulna was observed by CT image analyses and fluorescence bone labeling. The observation revealed that the new bone was formed not uniformly on the periosterium, but on the periosterium adjacent to the former ulna. This fact suggest those area are under the dynamic compressive strains, and the dynamic compressive strain alone is the effective stimuli for the bone formation.
These dynamic compressive strain specific woven bone formation would give accounts of the adaptive nature of bone remodeling
