Research Abstract	本研究は、我が国の文科省高エネルギー加速器研究機構(KEK)と英国中央研究所審議会(CCLRC)間で締結されている日英科学技術協力事業を進めるものである。同事業は、日本と英国が協力してCCLRC所属のラザフォードアップルトン研究所にある大強度パルス中性子源ISIS施設に単結晶試料専用高性能チョッパー型中性子分光器MAPSを建設し、中性子散乱による先端的物質科学研究を行うものである。日本側は主として、中性子検出器の開発及び設置を分担した。MAPS分光器は平成9年に着工、平成12年度に建設を完了し、平成13年6月より本格実験に入った。本研究で特に進めた研究は、酸化物高温超伝導体のスピン励起の研究である。我々は電子固有のスピンが高温超伝導に重要な役割を担っていると考え、ミクロかつダイナミカルな磁性研究に最強のプローブである中性子散乱を駆使し、高温超伝導発現の機構解明を目指している。具体的には、超伝導の性質を左右する電荷(ホール)量が異なる試料を順次作成し、その磁気スペクトルを系統的に調査している。最近の我々の研究では、超伝導が実現する寸前のホールを少量だけ含むLa2-xSrxCuO4単結晶を大量に育成し、MAPSにて実験を行った。低エネルギー領域では、ホールの周期的な配列を受けてスピンの運動も長周期構造を成しているが、高エネルギー側では恰も2次元反強磁性的な運動へと移り変わる様相を捉えた。これまでのパルス中性子実験の懸案であったバックグランド散乱の補正無しに、一挙にそして明確に高エネルギー磁気信号を観測した。これは、MAPS分光器の高性能に大きく起因している。現在、La2-xSrxCuO4超伝導試料を用いたMAPSでの新しい実験を計画しており、更なる理解が得られるものと期待している。
