Research Abstract

1. Changes in systemic status by aging :
1) Immunological function and periodontal status : FcγRIIIb-Na1 polymorphism was associated with the resistance to periodontitis (Miyazaki & Yoshie), and serum IgG2 was higher in elder population with > 19 teeth (Nakashima).
2) Bone mineral density and periodontal status: Healthy periodontitum was considered to be important to maintain the bone density of the lumbar vertebra (Nitta).
3) Systemic disease and periodontal regeneration: GBR was also effective in the bone repair in older rat model (Ohta).
4) Periodontal regeneration: Bone formation in palatal sites by BMP was not affected by aging (Kawanami).
2. Changes in periodontal tissue and cells by aging :
1) Reaction of periodontal cells with periodontopathic bacteria : A. actinomycetemcomitans induced apoptotic cell death of murine alveolar macrophages (Kowashi & Nishihara).
2) Collagen metabolism : Functional differences between elastin and fibrillin were observed in fibroblasts obtained from human gingiva and periodontal membrane (Yajima).
3) Changes in cell-biological functions: Radiation of low-power laser has effects on cell proliferation, inflammation, bone metabolism, and passive immunization with monoclonal antibodies was effective in animal model with periodontitis (Abiko).
4) Epithelial rests of Malassez in periodontal membrane : Epithelial rests of Malassez is considered to be involved in cementum repair (Ogawa).
