主たる活動と成果
北極海の物理化学生物モデルを開発し、大気循環に対する応答と炭素循環を調べた。極渦が強化すると上層水が北極海と大西洋の海水交換が増加することがわかった。また大気海洋間の炭素フラックスは、生物生産が盛んになると、海洋が吸収する方向に向かうことが示された。「みらい」航海によって酸素同位体と植物プランクトン・データを収集し、太平洋水が北極海に流入していることを示した。硫化ジメチルは海面付近(20メートル深)に多く、その起源物質であるクロロフィルはより深い層(50メートル深)にも多く存在する。その理由はこれからの研究によって明らかにする。バフィン湾とサロマ湖で収集した海氷アルジーと海水中の植物プランクトンを、高速液体クロマトグラフィーをもちいて分析した。その結果、ケイソウ類が主であることが判明した海氷アルジーは小型(20マイクロメーター以下)であり、海水プランクトンは大型であることがわかった。
