Research Abstract |
In the third year of this research program, we continued to investigate our specialized topics with which each of us had been concerned for last two years : Ito, head investigator, concentrated on the modern and contemporary cosmology and its philosophical backgrounds, Nakahata on the problems concerning intentionality and passion in Ancient Greek Philosophy (mainly in Aristotle), Kawazoe on the realtion between theology and philosophy in the 13th Scholastic Philosophy, and Fukutani on the possibility of natural theology in Modern Philosophy (especially in Kant). At the same time, in the final period of this research program, we have been discussing to integrate these above-mentioned particular topics in order to attain our original purpose of the investigation. As results of this research, we confirmed that Western Phiosophy had, while showing the "hard rationality" in appearance, the enduring elements which we should consider as out of the ordinary rationality. the important role of passion or affection and of rhetoric as the way of persuation in Greek Philosophy, the subtle but flexile relation between scientific knowledge and religious faith, and the problem of God as the ultimate ground for the rationality. So we have reached at the fundamental prospect in which we should look at many actual and urgen problems of the contemporary world from the viewpoint of "flexible rationality" without simply neglecting the concept of rationality in general.
