Research Abstract |
This research project deals with those aspects of verbal representation in terms of spatial experience, which accompanied with the radical change of the socio-historical conditions for communication and transportation in the German speaking area in 18. and 19. century. Analysing the different typs of texts such as travelogue, topography, correspndence, diary and novel there can be seen two competitive tendencies : landscape descriptions by authors like Herder, Goethe, Moritz, Sophie von Ralosch etc. are apt to be more and more personal and sujektive, while distanced observations of social critic and natural science intervene clearly in the texts by Humboldt, Heynse, and not least Forster. The concept of homogene and infinit space formed in 18. century is reconstructed as subjektivly percieved and represented experience connected with "literature" as a cultural institution, which must be cituated under contemporary interactions with other non-literary dicourses at that time, namely gardening tecniques, visual culture with various optical instruments, practical guidebooks for tourism and so on.
