Research Abstract |
A hygroscopicmaterial such as a wood is employed as an interiormaterial inastorage to realize a stable relative humidity traditionally in Japan. This kind of traditionhas continued for a long time, and the Shoso-in Treasure House is one of a symbolic archilecture. Objects are often enclosed double or triple wooden storage boxes within the storage. A continuous data of temperature and relative humidity within the Shoso-in Treasure House has measured for whole year according to our research program. The continuous and accurate climatic data of the Shoso-in will play a great role in researches for the environment to preserve cultural properties. Present storage houses employ the interior materials such as an artificial wood panel, ceramic typepanel and a natural wood. All these materials are suitable tocontrol relative humidity. An air conditioning system is installed at the same time for the aim of an active climatic control ingeneral. Our measurement of temperature and relative humidity has been applied to these facilities to recognize an efficiency of hygroscopic interior materials against stabilization of relative humidity. We also measured a concentration of organic acidic gases, aldehyde gases, nitrogen oxides and an ammonium gas to investigate a relationship between an air quality and the interiormaterialswithin the storage. It is likely that natural woods affect thequality of interior air so that the concentration of nitrogen gases and organic acidic gases is varied in terms of thekinds of wood and the period of wood panel after installation.
