Research Abstract |
We aimed to evaluate the advantage and feasibility of some scenario for restoration of environmental resources in Aral Sea basin. In particular, the scenario included "restoration of biological resoturces based on the geographical condition", "consideration of water management system with broad scale", and "conservation of biodiversity based on landscape ecology". For the purpose we constructed GIS database of topological and ecological data in the Aral Sea basin. We made the system evaluating the geographical condition, resource, and environment based on ecotope map (geological feature, vegetation, and soil), topology, climate, and NOAA/AVHRR 10-day composite. We found a great fluctuation of environment in the region by the construction and collapse of the dam between northern Aral and southern Aral. We also found that productivity of agriculture varied by the geographical condition ; in Turkestan, sustainable and traditional irrigation is maintained, on the other hand, irrigation system nearly break down in Kazarinsk area. We found a colony of Pelican that was estimated to be extinct.
