Research Abstract

The main purpose of this project was to establish new simple and practical methods of extincti on risk assessment. Main results of the project were as follows.
(1) Extinction risk assessment was performed for 365 spp which were qualified as DD (data deficient) in the Red List published by the Environment Agency (1997) and the result was used in the Red Data Book published by the Ministry of Environment (2000).
(2) We developed a simple equation to estimate decline rate per 10 years (R) using the quantitative data published in the RDB. Further, we developed an eqation to estimate mean extinction time (T) using R and population size (N).
(3) We developed a method of impact assessment for a land use plan in some area where threatened plants are native. This method uses mean extinction time (T) estimated by the above method.
(4) We developed two hotspot measures to identify hotspots of threats, and ranked secondary glids of Japan by using them.
(5) We compiled a database for all taxa of Japanese vascular plants.
