Research Abstract

As an industrial waste, expanded polystyrene is being accumulated in huge amounts. The lack of reclamation sites has created the need to find methods of utilizing this waste as a construction material. In this research project, a new attempt was made to investigate the efficiency of the waste expanded polystyrene which has been reduced the volume as a lightweight fill material behind the retaining walls. The physical characteristics of the expanded polystyrene were determined and a retaining wall model test was conducted by alternately sandwiching the polystyrene between soil layers. The stable calculation of the retaining wall has also been carried out so as to examine the feasibility of the resource recycling as a retaining wall backfilling material.
Recently, the municipal wasters ash discharged from the home has been increased. How to develop the technique for the decontamination and recycle from the viewpoint of environmental pollution and the lack of the final disposal space from reclamation sites is becoming an important subject. In this research project, the quality of the decontaminated municipal waster ash mixed with the Ariake clay and lime mixed is also evaluated as the soil improvement material based on the unconfined compression test.
