| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research project is to clarify the necessity, significance and ideals of Japanese death education on the theoretical basis of Buddhism. For this purpose we initially intended to arrange and confirm the historical genealogy of death education in Japan and then to prepare proper curriculums, text books and teaching materials with some instructions about place, time and methods for various phases of education such as pre-school education, compulsory education, professional education and lifelong education etc. A series of extension lectures for the practicing of death education was held in Joetsu University of Education in 2001 by the association called Niigata Daigaku, Joets Kyoiku Daigaku Inochi Kyoiku wo Kangaeru Kai" which had been organized by the investigators of this research project, Tamiya and Tokumaru. It enabled us to recognize what kind of problem and situation existed in actual educational activities related to death education and what kind of need the teaahers had, and it also enabled us to learn that many teachers engaging in medicines and nursing education, Buddhists, Vihara priests, patients and other people had great expectations and need for death education, which gave us some suggestions and problems for our future study. Although the original purpose has not been achieved perfectly, some satisfactory results such as the successful extension lectures(as shown above) or the making of teaching materials for the upper classes of elementary school have been gained. It is desirable that in the future the knowledge, information, and methods related to death education resulting from this research will be practically applied to nursing education and school education etc. We wish to discuss the necessity and ideals of death education at home and in society."
