Research Abstract |
This study investigates the exile literature during the Third Reich, focusing on the activities and works of exiled playwrights. Many writers fled Germany under Nazi regime, seeking political asylum in various other countries. They had to live under different political conditions according to where they were exiled. In addition, the changes of the diplomatic relationships between Germany and other countries affected the conditions of the exiles. For example, the annexation of the Czech Republic and Austria by Germany affected directly the exiles living in both r countries, and as the result, they had to flee again. The final report looks at exiles in history, and surveys the actual conditions of anti-Nazi exiles in many Western and Asian countries. This study examines the life and dramatic works of Georg Kaiser in Switzerland, where he was exiled, specifically : 1. "Der Soldat Tanaka" 2. "Das Russ der Madusa" and "Die Spieldose" 3. "Klawitter" and "Der englische Sender" 4. "Napoleon in New Orleans" I made general commentaries on exile literature in a review newspaper, "Tosho Shinbun (The Book Review Press)." Also, in 2000, I carried out researches in this field in Spain, and in 2001, in Northern Europe.
