Research Abstract

An instrument, called Laser Speckle Flowgraphy (LSFG), has been developed in our research groupe to visualize the blood circulation of human tissue in a 2-D color coded map. In this research project, we have developed a new LSFG system to visualize in real-time the blood flow map of the human scalp. A small probing head comprised of the laser diode, reflecting mirrors, imaging lens and the image sensor was made to be placed above the scalp. The motion of speckles prodeced by the moving blood cells in the scalp was detected by the image sensor, and its rate of variation at each pixel point was calculated by the personal computer. The 2-D blood flow maps, as well as their time variation, were displayed in the color CRT screen. Two different types of the image sensor, 1) the special version with 100X100 pixels and the high scanning rate of 500 frame/sec, and 2) normal CCD camera were used for the detector. By calculating the new Blur Rate of the speckles introduced in this project, the normal CCD camera was found to be usable for the measurement of the blood flow map with much higher spatial resolution.
