Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research was to develop a new voltage regulator using the orthogonal-core type variable inductor. As the voltage regulator is connected to high voltage power distribution line in series, reliability is most important. The application of the orthogonal-Core type variable inductor to the series voltage regulator is expected because the variable inductor has desirable features including simple construction, high reliability, easiness of control and low harmonic currents. In this research, the author clarifies the operating characteristics of the variable inductor, and makes a proto type voltage regulator. The obtained results are as follows : (1)Analysis of the operating characteristics. The orthogonal-core type variable inductor utilizes a nonlinear B-H characteristic of magnetic core. Furthermore, the orthogonal-core has complicate flux distribution. For this reason, it was difficult to analyze quantitatively the operating characteristics of the orthogonal-core type variable inductor. In this research, the author proposes a new calculation method based on 3-dimensional nonlinear magnetic circuit. The calculated results and experimental ones show good agreement. The analytical method is useful for optimum design of the orthogonal-core type variable inductor. (2)Trial construction of variable inductor. Based on the above results, the author made a 1kVA proto type voltage regulator using the orthogonal-core type variable inductor. Experimental results indicate that the trial voltage regulator has good controllability and low harmonics. The voltage regulator developed here is useful for stabilizing the complicated power distribution system.
