Research Abstract

The results of this research are summarized as follows.
1. The polyurethane elastomer (PUE) films similar to polymer gets have been found to show the electrostriction effect. We proposed the application to moving devices such as an actuator utilizing the electrostriction effect of PUE films.
2. The actuators are monomorph type fabricated by PUE film and two kinds of metal electrodes of the different thickness. Since these actuators work at high voltage more than 1 KV, we controlled the structure of films by doping C_<60> derivatives (fullerenol) into PUE so that the actuators could operate under a low voltage.
3. The bends of fullerenol doped PUE actuators and non-doped PUE actuators varied at the square of an electric field. Also, the bend depends on thickness of electrodes, when the metal electrode were thinning until 200 nm, all of samples were bent in the direction of cathode electrode independent of metal materials. They showed polarity effect.
4. The bends of fullerenol doped actuators were larger than that of non-doped actuators and the working voltage was also small.
5. The force of fullerenol doped actuators increased in proportion to an electric field. It was clear that the induced forces of these actuators strongly depend on the thickness of PUE films. It was cleared that the fullerenol doped PUE films appeared the piezoelectric effect.
