Research Abstract

The main purpose of the present study was to examine degree of dependency for abnormal glucose metabolism of hypertensive patients on insulin-dependent or -independent glucose uptake, which was determined by an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) before and after a 10-week mild exercise training (corresponding approximately 50% of maximum oxygen uptake). Simultaneously, other factors including body mass index, waist-hip ratio, %fat and I biochemical parameters such as total, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglyceride were determined. After a 10-week exercise training, both insulin-dependent and -independent glucose uptakes were significantly improved and this was accompanied with an improvement of insulin secretion. There was a decrease tendency in waist-hip ratio, %fat, LDL i cholesterol and triglyceride, but no change in body mass index, total cholesterol and free fatty acid. In addition, there was no particular correlation between the improvement of insulin-dependent or -independent glucose uptake and the changes of examined biochemical and physiological factors. This was probably due to relatively small number of patient group. Association study between gene polymorphisms of ACE, angiotensinogen and ATI receptor and the degree of improvement of glucose uptake is currently on going. These results will be reported all together.
