Research Abstract |
A technique of non-invasive, real-time monitoring of temperature change distribution has long been desired when performing hyperthermia treatment. We have been participating in research on a temperature-change mapping technique using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The purpose of this study was to develop an MRI-compatible gel-form electrode for RF hyperthermia treatment. 1 . An MRI-compatible agar phantom containing 0.12% nickel sulfur oxygen (NiSO_4) was developed. We found that the phantom has no effect on the stability and uniformity of the magnetic field. 2. A saline-containing gel-form electrode was designed. The electromagnetic field and the specific absorption ratio (SAR) of the designed gel-form electrode were evaluated using a CAD system (MAFIA version 2.0). 3. The temperature rise and the heated volume size of the agar phantom were evaluated using the liquid-type electrode with varying concentrations of saline solution. The electrode with a higher saline concentration produced a greater temperature rise and heated a larger volume of the phantom. 4. For the real-time monitoring of temperature change during RP hyperthermia treatment, the RF signal should be gated alternately. An interlock circuit between MR scanner and RF generator was devised for this purpose. We carried out an initial investigation of the gel-form electrode for RF hyperthermia, compatible with temperature-change mapping with an MRI system.
