Research Abstract |
In clinical study, three dimensional spiral scan fMR images and cerebral perfusion images with arterial spin labeling (ASL) method were obtained by using a standard head coil on a 1.5 T clinical MRI scanner. Three dimensional fMR images were very useful diterminethe relationship between the sensoriomotor cortex and brain tumor or vascular lesions. This BOLD imaging was more sensitive method to detect activation area than functional perfusion imaging by arterial spin labeling. In animal study, experimental functional brain mapping of control and ischemic ( MCAO model) rats were obtained by activity-induced manganese dependent contrast (AIM) MRI, a new method of functional MRI using manganese ion contrast agent. Manganese ion (Mn2+) is handled in a manne similar to calcium ion (Ca2+) in many biological systems and known to enter cells through ligand-gated or voltage-gated Ca2+ channels during nerve action potentials. Therefore, AIM MRI could be useful for direct monitoring of regional brain activation. In control study, stastical discrimination between the stimulationspecific brain activation and the non-specific signal enhancement was provided by the dynamic AIM (DAIM) MRI study using a calculated relative influx ratio. In ischemic model, the ischemic region was detected immediately after MCAO using the AIM MRI.This is the first report describing the detection of super-acute focal ischemia using the AIM MRI.Furthermore, the area of the hyper-intensity on AIM MRI was extremely small, compared with the area of decreased ADC.the mismatched area between manganese ion influx and decreased ADC of water in the focal ischemia could be consistent with the treatabe region of reversible diffusion-weighted hyperintensity after recirculation. In conclusion, spiral scan fMRI and AIM MRI have an extremely high potentiality to make diagnosis of various diseases, to examine the pathophysiology and to evaluate the treatment.
