Research Abstract

This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of the caries prevention on primary and permanent teeth of two groups, the recallant the control group, and to estimate the economical benefits of the caries prevention by the recall system of their life time.
The recall group was composed of 88 preschool children who had undergone dental caries treatment and had regular oral health check-ups until the age of 12.
The control group was composed of 151 preschool children who had undergone dental caries treatment, but never had regular oral health cheek-ups until at the age of 12.
With the recall group, the average duration of the first restorations in the primary molars was 3.30, years and with the control group, 2.48 years. The duration for the restorations for the recall group was 0.8 years longer than the control group.(ANOVA p<0.001)
With the recall group, the mean DF-teeth was 2.39 at 12 years of age, and with the control group was 4.52. The recall group showed 2.1 difference in the number of caries teeth than the control group.(ANOVA p<0.001)
Of the recall group the dental expensess for tretment of the primary molar theeth was about 39,456〜89,664 yen cheaper than the control group.
Of the recall group the dental expensess for tretment of the permanent teeth was about 13,802 yen cheaper than the control group at the age of 12years.
Basing on the recall system, the estimated decrease of dental expenses was about 522,526〜572,734 yen till age of 75.
The cost-effectiveness ratio, which means to decrease the possible dental expenses per one vist, is about 19,000〜21,000 yen.
The cost-benefit ratio, which means to decrease the possible dental expenses per one vist expense, is 5.5〜6.0
These results suggests that the recall system during childhood is effective in decreasing of the dental expenses, in their life time.
