Research Abstract |
1. Held the 14th to 22nd meetings of the Bioethics Education Network at Nihonbashi High School and Kojimachi High Scool in Tokyo. Each was attended by 15-30 teachers. Published the Bioethics Education Network Newsletter, and two books from the network activities to date. 2. Improvement of the International Bioethics Resource Center at the University of Tsukuba. A database is being maintained and data being presented in the Eubios Journal of Asian and International Bioethics. 3. Survey on biotechnology and bioethics conducted on general public and scientists throughout Japan, which gave an update on the trends in acceptance since 1991. 4. Publication of results of analysis of surveys on biotechnology, including analysis of open comments from high school students, scientists and general public in Japan. Continued analysis of the open comments to enable understanding the reasoning people have. This includes understanding of the roles that scientists believe they have in society. 5. Held the Fifth International Tsukuba Bioethics Roundtable (TRT5), 20-23 November, 1999, in Tsukuba with 60 Japanese and 36 foreign researchers (from 19 different countries attended). 6. Held the Sixth International Tsukuba Bioethics Roundtable (TRT6), 27-29 October, 2000, in Tsukuba as first part of a series of 3 conferences on Bioethics, Health and Environment (other two in Tokyo and Fukui). In TRT6, 60 Japanese and 46 foreign researchers (from 17 different countries attended). 7. Discussion of the role of biologists in bioethics with persons by interviews in Japan and overseas. A network of researchers is growing in many different countries interested in these issues. 8. The results were discussed with Japanese and foreign researchers, and presented in several conferences.
