Research Abstract |
Needs of the society for statistical education are changing and increasing in accordance with a progress in information technology. In the coming information society, ability to correctly read and understand data and statistical thinking are considered to be the minimum requirement for citizens at large. In professional fields, statistical knowledge and capability to apply statistical methods are prerequisite. In spite of these changing conditions of the society, statistical education in Japan is deteriorating both in the secondary level and higher education level. With these in mind, international comparative analysis and studies in statistical education in selective countries were made in this research project. We studied contents of statistical education, teaching materials and examples used in teaching statistics, etc. in the secondary-level education in selected countries, including the U.S.A.and U.K.We carefully analyzed the curriculum and evaluation standards for school mathematics developed by the US National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Curriculum for England. We also studied the treatment of probability and statistics in the national curriculum for Korea. Based on these studies, comparative analysis was made. In August 2000, the international round table conference on statistical education was held in Tokyo under the auspices of the International Association for Statistical Education. The main theme of the conference was "Training researchers in the use of statistics". Results of the studies were published in the report : International comparative analysis and studies in statistical education in the information society.
