Research Abstract |
Magnetic suspension system "MINO" series has been developed for fiscal two years to appear as "MINO-2". The detail of this system is described below. 1) Development of magnetic suspension system " MINO-2" We completed the system composing of compact four units to be easily portable : Gas Puff Unit (GPU) to introduce a pellet into the next stage ; Position Detection Unit (PDU) ; Position Control Unit (PCU) ; and Pellet Suspension Unit (PSU). Testing "MIND-2" not only to a direct-drive pellet for Gekko-XII laser fusion facilities at ILE-Osaka but also to an indirect target to be used in NIF laser fusion facilities at LLNL, we showed "MINO-2" is applicable to both type pellets. Analyzing optical forces, we could conclude that photon force is well suitable to damp the pellet oscillation in high vacuum. 2) Development of pellet fabrication and characterization for "MIND-2". High-reflective pellet of Al-Ni coating was realized by vacuum deposition. For the purpose of reducing Rayleigh-Taylor insta

bilities at pellet surface, we showed the mesh type laser deposition technique can produce a variety of magnetic substances over pellet. At this experiment, droplet decrement is attainable by pulsed voltage pulse to a mesh. Inferring that chemical approach is suitable to Ni coating into inner surface of pellet, electroless plating is found suitable to get ferromagnetic Ni coating. Wavelength-scanning interferometer was newly constructed to measure Ni-thickness by nanometer-range precision. In this case, electric discharge machining is found suitable to have small base-plane area. Specific susceptibility of Ni thin coat over a pellet could be measured by pellet motion in a temperature controlled oven to give good agreement with theoretical estimation. Aiming cryogenic pellet, fundamental experiment of super-conductor-levitation was conducted. 3) Other non-supporting technique development otherwise magnetic suspension Several technique have been developed : improvement of electric-suspension, electric pellet launching, transportation of successive pellet by electric curtain device, and pellet alignment by laser beam Less
