Research Abstract |
Analyzing the Dutch colonial city planning require comprehensive study of the colonizing history since the late 16^<th> century, the development of Dutch East India Company (VOC 1602-1799) and of the Dutch West India Company (WIC 1621-1791). Firstly, this study made an inventory of 157 Dutch colonial cities, including the places with forts and factories. The archival research on the each city was conducted at the institutions, namely, National Archives in Haag, Museum of Tropics in Amsterdam, and others. In addition, the research collected numerous historical maps and made a list. The study clarified the overview of the work of Simon Stevin (1548-1620), who formed the model of the Dutch colonial city planning. The image of civil engineers, engaged in Dutch colonial city planning, is also examined. With the above background surveys, the study conducted field researches in Galle, Cochin, Capetown, Willemstad, Malacca and other cities. Also conducted are the continuous research in Surabaya and Jakarta (Indonesia) and brief survey in Paramaribo (Suriname) and Recife. As a result, planning concept and physical types of the Dutch colonial cities are understood, with further analysis on the relationship between city development and urban residences
