| Research Abstract |
本研究は、19世紀のイギリスにおいて、体育を意味するphysical educationという用語の出現経緯や意味内容を研究の対象とし、当時の体操関連用語との関連をも念頭に置いたphysical educationの概念史的研究である。研究の内容として、当時のphysical educationあるいはgymnasticsの関係図書・史料を蒐集し、19世紀における用語physical educationの初出とその概念形成時期を査定した。平成11年度には、1830年代のphysical education概念を取り扱った。そして、physical educationの初期文献の遡及調査を行った。
特に、体育(Physical Education)を意味する英語表記文献の初出は、Samuel Smiles著のPhysical Education:or the nurture and management of children,founded on the study of their nature and constitution,Edinburgh,1838年版であった。この底本になったのが、1836年に出版されたCharles Caldwell 著のThought on Physical Education,Edinburgh,であることが明らかになった。さらに、Charles Caldwell著のThought on Physical Educationは1834年にBostonで出版されていた。これら3つの著書は、ハーバート・スペンサーの『知育・徳育・体育論』(Herbert Spencer著のEducation:Intellectual,Moral,and Physical,London,1860)の成立以前のphysical education概念の考察に不可欠な文献であることが判明した。
