| Research Abstract |
本研究は、19世紀のイギリスにおいて、体育を意味するphysical educationという用語の出現経緯や意味内容を研究の対象とし、当時の体操関連用語との関連をも念頭に置いたphysical educationの概念史的研究である。体育を意味する英語表記(Physical Education)の文献の初出は,Samuel Smiles著のPhysical Education : or the nurture and management of children, founded on the study of their nature and constitution, Edinburgh,1838年版であった。平成12年度には、Samuel SmilesのPhysical Education(1838)を主要テキストとして1830年代のphysical education概念を明らかにした。Samuel Smiles著のPhysical Education(1838)は,医学者の立場からみた身体や運動に関する自然科学的な知見を示しているが,Rousseau(John James Rousseau, Emilius or, An Essey on Education, Vol.I,II,1773年版.)の影響も強く受けており,当時の子供の生活習慣や健康に配慮する教育学的な古典的文献として注目される。すなわち,Herbert Spencerの著,Education : Intellectual, Moral, and Physical, London,1860年版の成立以前のphysical education概念の考察に不可欠な文献であることが判明した。
