| Research Abstract |
This research project aims to clarify the characteristics and dynamism of the region where small towns and the dispersed settlement are dominant. The region is neither included in any metropolitan areas and any urban areas of the regional or prefectural capitals nor mountainous areas. The sample regions are Tonami Plain in Toyama Prefecture, Isawa plain in Iwate Prefecture and Furano Basin in Hokkaido. For the comparative studies, South Ontario in Canada and Victoria in Australia were chosen as research areas.
The research report includes total 17 articles consisting of two papers of general introduction and a discussion on political-administrative planning, six on the dispersed settlement areas, four on the areas consisting of small towns, three on the regions in Canada and Australia, and two on the regional and historical process.
