Research Abstract |
The virtual reality (VR) becomes an active area of research as tele-interaction in recent years due to the advanced progress in broadband network. Virtual environment (Haptics) system with force feedback and the sense of tough allows users feeling of manipulating virtual objects. Thus, haptic research can potentially benefit a wide range of virtual reality application as in medical simulation, training, telemanipulation and applications for handicapped and blind community. This research addresses the Super-Tele-Interaction system architecture of multi-user remote communication in, virtual environment to make 3D objects in shared virtual environments. Users can experience touching and manipulating virtual objects, but also feel their haptics such as weight, surface smoothness, and compliance. Super-Tele-Interaction system consisting of haptic virtual reality and telecommunication is closely related to the network-based shared virtual environment (SVE) and can achieve multiple virtual worlds connected by the network to share information with one another. JAIST research group has developed and e implemented the network-based SVE to design 3D objects by multi users. INTEC research group has developed the haptic painting system in VR for traditional applied fine arts. IRII research group implemented the 3D-object design system in VR using pressure sensor array. We have also implemented VR robotics system for tele-interaction though the internet and proposed the haptics control system between network-robots and VR-robots. These research results are basic technology to realize the collaborative shared haptic virtual environment and super-reality tele-interaction system.
