Research Abstract |
The ability to sit up from supine to sitting position is important for physical independence. We have been studying to restore motor function using the functional electrical stimulation (FES). The reconstruction of sitting up activity is one of the difficult issues for the FES.The first purpose of this study was to clarify the muscle activity and movement pattern during the sitting up in the healthy subjects. The second was to search a possibility to reconstruct sitting up by means of FFS. We focused on a sitting up pattern that was to get up from supine to long sitting through the right on elbow position. Eight young male volunteers were participated in this study. We have investigated 18 muscles that were neck, trunk and upper extremity muscles simultaneously using surface electrodes. ee phases. The first phase was from the starting position to when the right shoulder girdle lifted up from the support surface. The second phase was to the point of on elbow position, and then the third phase was until the long sitting position. The activities of both sternocleidomastoideus muscles were preceded other muscles in the beginning of the first phase to flex and rotate the head. The both rectus abdominis activities were gradually increased and were peaked at early second phase. The activity of left obliquus externus was higher than right side in the second phase to flex and rotate trunk toward right side. The left serratus anterior was acted earlier and higher than the right side in the first phase to protract the left shoulder girdle to lift up from support surface. To restore sitting up activity in patients with hemiplegia, the serratus anterior muscle in paralyzed side was seemed to be important muscle. However, from the results of attempt to electrical stimulation for the serratus anterior in health subjects, effective electrical stimulation for the serratus anterior needed to solve several issues such as location of electrodes, size of electrodes, stimulation intensity and so on.
