Research Abstract

本特定領域研究総括班では、本年度はとくに社会への説明責任を重くとらえ、一般教育講演会の開催、および当該分野の若い研究者への啓蒙のため、専門書の翻訳・出版などに取り組んだ。一般教育講演会に関しては昨年5月に横浜で開催された日本発生生物学会、日本細胞生物学会の合同年会において、両学会に共通する講演会として開催し、発生生物学のテキストブックの著者として有名なScott Gilbert博士、昆虫写真家、海野和夫氏を講師として招いた。東京、横浜近郊の高校生物教諭に案内状、ポスターを送付したことによって、多数の教師、高校生の参加も得た。生物多様性のしくみ、擬態など生物の神秘について平易に講演していただき、一般社会にも教育的効果のあった講演会であった。また、本特定領域研究の重要な研究テーマのひとつである「生物多様性獲得のしくみ」に関するSean Carrollの著書"From DNA to Diversity"は進化の分子メカニズムについて解説された名著であり、大学、大学院などでも広く用いられるべきテキストブックであると考え、本特定領域の活動のひとつとして、同著の和訳に取り組んだ、上野、野地を中心に数名の本特定研究班員の協力を得て、本年2月に「DNAから解き明かされる形づくりと進化の不思議」として出版することができた。この出版により、より一層、本分野の認知が深まることを期待している。
昨年10月、班会議と同時に総括班会議を開催し、本領域の運営について議論した。研究活動は概ね順調であるとの評価を受けたが、若手研究者の交流の活性化などいくつかの課題は来年度に残された。
