Research Abstract	2001年7月に全国規模のトポロジーシンポジウムを開催して、位相幾何の諸分野における各グループの研究成果を発表し、研究の交流を行った。葉層構造論、写像類群、3次元多様体論、一般位相、代数的トポロジー、特異点理論、ゲージ理論等における最新の研究成果が発表された。分野を特定した研究集会については以下のように開催し、研究の交流を行った。8月に「有理ホモトピー論の展開と応用」、「東北結び目セミナー」、9月に「リーマン面に関連する位相幾何学」、10月に「葉層構造の位相的研究」、「結び目理論の現在・過去・未来」、11月に「特異点の数理」、「ホモトピー論シンポジウム」、「graphと3次元多様体の研究」、「変換群論シンポジウム」、「トポロジーとコンピュータ」、12月に「結び目のトポロジーIV」、「General Topology Symposium」、1月に「4次元トポロジーの研究」、「第9回日韓トポロジーセミナー」。これらの研究集会では、最新の研究成果が発表されるとともに、研究者の間で研究成果を整理するとともに若手研究者を育成するためのミニコースも行われた。また年間研究計画「21世紀の低次元トポロジー」の一部を遂行した。これらの研究を進めるために、前年度購入したマイクロサーバーを維持し、研究者間のネットワークに役立てた。広い範囲の数学との連携を探るために、Encounter with Mathematicsの集会を4月に「Invitation to Diophantine Geometry」、9月に「不変式論のルネサンス---源流への散歩道---」、10月に「実解析への誘い--実解析的方法を使いこなそう--」、2月に「「離散」の世界--可換から非可換へ」をテーマに開催し、異なる分野の研究者、大学院生等の間の交流を図った。
