Research Abstract |
East Asia is now witnessing a tidal wave of economic integration. Closer economic partnership has become a key ward to describe economic diplomacy in the region. The sea change does not limit to economic affairs ; political and security relations have been changing too. One of the engines which promote those changes is ASEAN (the Association of South-East Asian Nations) .This regional body also changed in its nature drastically during the 1990s. It accomplished the enlargement from six-nation organization to the so-called ASEAN Ten comprising all the Southeast Asian nations (except newly independent East Timor). It started deepening its integrative sphere : the formation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). The enlargement and deepening of ASEAN influenced East Asian international relations so as to institutionalize a more integrated network such as "ASEAN+3." This research project consisting of six researchers has investigated how ASEAN's enlargement and deepening influenced the change in East Asian international relations. Specifically, there are two areas of focus : (1)the relationship between change in ASEAN and changes in its member nations, and (2)the relationship between ASEAN on the one hand and Japan, China and the United States on the other. This report is the compilation of the articles and essays primarily written by the head researcher with the collaboration of other members of the project.
