Research Abstract

本年度は、巨大磁気抵抗効果を示すマンガン酸化物の母体であり、また軌道秩序を示す典型物質であるLaMnO_3のシングルドメインの結晶を作成することに成功し、光学スペクトルの測定によってその電子構造の異方性を明らかにした。LaMnO_3は770K付近で協力的ヤーンテーラー変形を伴った軌道整列相転移を示し、さらに140K付近でA型の反強磁性相へと転移する。多くの理論計算は、A型の反強磁性秩序によって電子構造の異方性が生じることを予言しているが、低温で観測された大きな異方性は温度の上昇とともに緩やかに減少し、反強磁性転移点では大きな影響を受けず、むしろ、軌道整列転移点で急激に消失することが明らかになった。このことは、軌道秩序が電子構造に与える影響の重要性を示しており、また、この結果からLaMnO_3の最低電荷励起はモット型ではなく電荷移動型であることが結論される。
さらに、この典型的な軌道整列系において軌道の集団励起に対応する軌道波をラマン散乱によって観測することに初めて成功した。100meV以上の高いエネルギー位置に観測されたラマンバンドは、その偏光依存性や散乱強度など理論的な予測と一致し、それが軌道波であることが確認された。
一方で、磁場中でのスペクトロスコピー用の実験系の立ち上げを行い、超伝導磁石を用いた反射分光、ラマン分光を行うための測定系を整備した。これにより、来年度に向けて磁場中での反射分光、ラマン分光測定によって、巨大磁気抵抗と軌道秩序の相関を明らかにし、また、軌道波に対する磁場の影響などを明らかにすることができる。
