Research Abstract |
Three different ionic-liquids have been synthesized; [bmim]PF_6, [bmim]BF_4, and [bmim](CF_3SO_2)_2N, where [bimim] stands for the butyhiiethylimidazolium ion. The structure of those ionic liquids has been studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopy; It has been elucidated that the [bmim] cation m [bmim]PF_6 and [bmim]BF_4 takes the same structure including the conformation of the pentyl group. The PF_6 anion in [bmim]PF_6 has been found to retain its octahedral symmetry, but its, site in [bmim]PF_6 is somewhat lower than O_h. The photophysics and photochemistry in ionic liquids have been studied by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It has been found that trans to cis isomerization of stilbene proceeds in [bmim]PF_6 even if its viscosity is about two orders of magnitude larger than that of ordinary organic solvents. This result indicates that viscosity is not a good measure of the property of an ionic liquid as a solvent.
