Research Abstract |
The present study is concerned with mesoscopic macromolecular architecture based on radial-growth polymerization (RGP) of sarcosine N-carboxyanhydride (NCA), i.e., N-methylglycine NCA, with poly(trimethyleneimine) dendrimer and with poly(amido amine) dendrimer to generate a linear polymer-hyperlinked dendrimer. It is noteworthy that the star-shaped block copolymer is conveniently prepared by one-pot reaction with the dendritic initiator. In this polymerization system, propagating vectors have an order of a radial symmetry initiated by terminal active ends of the dendrimer as an initiator core. Numbers of the linear segment are strictly determined by generation of the dendrimer, since the fast initiation/slow propagation system is adopted. Thus, the present multiple polymerization system is different from conventional polymerizations employed for preparation of star polymers. Besides the synthetic aspect, size and shape of the star-shaped dendrimer were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Living polymerization of sugar-substituted amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides (glycoNCAs) initiated with the dendrimers was also undertaken to afford intelligent large sugar balls. Molecular recognition abilities of the large dendrimer were examined by erythrocyte agglutination inhibition assays using wheet germ agglutinin (WGA). Complex formation ability of the star dendrimers was further investigated by electrophoresis.
