Research Abstract |
The first aim of this project is to make clear the history of Tatara (iron making) at Okuizumo. Secondly, we make clear the history of the salt industry at Chugoku area. Thirdly, we make clear the history of Yanai cotton. We have collected many materials on the traditional industries from Sannin Paper. Next, we have collected many materials on Tatara iron making of Sakurai family in Sata town, Itohara family in Yokota town, Sawazu family in Gotu city. We have gone the libraries and the museums in Yamaguchi prefecture, Osaka prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture. And, we have collected many materials on the traditional industries. After that, we have analyzed the operation of Tatara (iron making), iron culture in Okuizumo, the facilities(Takadono) and life style in Sannai colony(the worker's residence) which five hundred or six hundred workers lived. And, I published some paper on the traditional industries. The strike of " Hamako" (workers in the salt pans) were closely connected with high prices during Meizi period. They were hard up for cash from day to day. When their living wages did not rise to high prices, they struck for higher wages. The cotton industries in Yamaguchi prefecture developed in the farm villages. The Yanai cotton producers turned out Shiro Momen (a kind of cotton fabric), Chizimi (a kind of cotton fabric) Shimamomen (a kind of cotton fabric) for the needs in the market. The operation of Tatara (iron making) continues for three days or four days. And, the iron prices in Osaka had the great influences the Tatara management.
