Research Abstract |
In this work, we have investigated novel optical devices using nanoclusters including (1) patterned ultra-thin optical polarizing films, and (2) multiwavelength optical data storage media, etc. For the patterned ultra-thin optical polarizing films, we have fabricated the polarizing films for the wavelength of 800 nm and have successfully patterned those by the irradiation of high-powered carbon dioxide laser. The patterned polarizing would be useful for optical computing and sensing thechnology. For the multiwavelength optical data storage media, we have demonstrated the metal island films are very interesting optical data storage media for write-once multi-wavelength 3-D optical disks. The basic operation has been experimentally confirmed using aluminum-silver compound metal island films for 490 nm and silver-gold compound metal island films for 810 nm. In addition, we proposed novel waveguide polarizers using artificial birefringent media, including periodic dielectric multilayers, porous dielectric media, and columnar dielectric media.
