Research Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify application of international health experiences in developing countries by Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) nurses to their nursing activities and their circumstance to apply their experiences.
Two types of study were conducted in their research. In the Study 1, questionnaires were mailed to 991 former JOCV nurses. Of the questionnaires, 89 were not delivered; 44 % of the remainder responded. The data indicated that 75.8 % of them resigned for participation in JOCV program and 60.4 % of them got a job within 6 months after their return. 83.1% of them had a will to be engaged in international cooperation on return, but there were obstacles such as family, job, and their own competence.
In the Study 2, 102 former JOCV nurses were interviewed concerning differences and similarities in nursing between their host countries and Japan, change of their view of nursing, application and possibilities of contribution of their international health experiences. 2,902 codes were extracted from the interview and the codes were categorized. Results indicated that their experiences were used rather for changing their mind than for their knowledge and skills.
