Research Abstract

This investigation was carried out intending ultimately to make clear the establishment processes of cultural exchange around the Fugoppe Cave in the Zoku-Jomon Culture society and the pictures sculptured on the cave walls and to improve learning by experience based on cultural assets and environments of the place for life-long learning through a reconstruction of the paleoenvironment at that time. We could obtain successful results on the cultural interchange routes among Japanese Islands, Sakhalin and the Asian Continent, Based on the livelihood and migration of the people of Zoku-Jomon Society that began ca. 2,000 years before. And the paleoenvironmental change that became its background also became clear by movement of people and things. The establishment age of the sculptured pictures of the Fugoppe Cave and the significance of them are almost resolved. Our results of these investigations were presented at 55th special exhibition "Zoku-Jomon people who left Cave Sites" and relates lectures which were held at the Historical Museum of Hokkaido.
We held open symposium and forum and many investigators attended at these symposia and they engaged in interdisciplinary investigation of the Fugoppe Cave. And we discussed about how the Fugoppe Cave should be managed and preserved in the future as cultural assets with many people from Yoichi Town, Hokkaido and Honshu.
Based on these activities we proposed new several proposals for the Fugoppe Cave as a "Field station" model featuring them of at cultural assets. This idea will be reflected to improvement enterprise of preservation facility of "Fugoppe Cave Historical Site" now in progress and renewed facility will be open in April 2004 (Heisei 16).
