Research Abstract

Partial liquefaction process of wood and carbonization of its product were investigated in order to establish novel method of preparing wood ceramics. The results are as follows ;
1. Nature of wood liquefaction : The investigation of liquefaction behavior indicated that phenol liquefaction process is exhaustive organo-solvolysis, to lead to cellulose components to completely decomposed substance which dissolves in some polar organic solvents. In other word, partial liquefaction of wood provides a mixture of cellulose components as residue and liquefied lignin and hemi-cellulose as liquefied portion.
2. Preparation of partially liquefied wood with phenol : Partially liquefied wood including 50% of residue and 50% of liquefied product was successfully obtained by applying less amount of phenol charged an lower reaction temperature as compared with complete liquefaction.
3. Preparation of Moldings from partially liquefied wood : Moldings from several partially liquefied products were also successfully obtained by the aid of formaldehyde as crosslinKing agent. Therefore, the moldings were subject to carbonization.
4. Weight loss of carbon materials based on partially liquefied products : TGA measurements indicated that the weight loss of moldings from partially liquefied wood during carbonization was lower than that of usual wood ceramics.
Therefore, we conclude that the ceramics from partially liquefied wood gives higher yield than that from phenol impregnated wood.
