| Research Abstract |
霊長類の脳において、物体認識に関わる視覚神経経路の最終段階、下側頭葉皮質(IT野)における情報処理について調べ、以下のことを明らかにした。
(1)抑制性伝達物質GABAがIT野細胞の形選択性の形成に関わっていることを示したわれわれの先行研究(Wang et al., 2000; Nature Neurosci.)を発展させ、そのような効果が中心視領域だけでなく周辺視領域でもおこることを示し、受容野の大きさの決定にも関わっていることを明らかにした(Wang et al., Cerebral Cortex,2002)。
(2)GABAはIT野細胞の形選択性のみならず、テクスチャーに対する選択性の形成にも寄与している(Wang et al., NeuroReport,2003)。
(3)IT野の前段にあたるV4野にも、両眼視差に感受性を持つ細胞が存在する(Watanabe et al.,2002)。
(4)大脳皮質の興奮性伝達物質であるグルタミン酸の受容体のサブタイプの一つ、GluR2/3の霊長類視覚野における分布を免疫組織化学的に調べ、一次視覚野からIT野に向かって、GluR2/3陽性細胞の分布が徐々に高密度になる(Xu et al.,2003)。
