Research Abstract	本研究では、海棲哺乳類(イルカ、アザラシなど)の生活を理解する上で重要な研究項目である分布、回遊、成長、繁殖、食性、個体群判別などについて研究成果をあげてきた。同時に、有機塩素系化合物(PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, etc.)、有機スズ化合物(TBT, DBT, MBT)、重金属類(Hg, Cd, Pb, etc.)、放射性核種(Cs, Pu, Sr, etc.)などの有害化学物質の生物蓄積特性を明らかにするとともに、その生物影響について国際的に注目される成果をあげてきた。その成果は、国内外の学会などで25回発表するとともに(国際学会他:11、国内学会他:14)、学術雑誌(英文論文:24編)、総説(4編)などに掲載してきた。なかでも、本研究チームが開発した最新のデータロガーやとカメラロガーを装着して収集したバイカルアザラシの潜水行動記録および南極海のウエッデルアザラシの潜水行動記録は、これらの動物の生活史や生息環境を理解するうえでこれまでの常識を覆す科学的に大変インパクトのある情報を入手することができた。発表した国際ワークショップでの評価は極めて高く、世界的にこの分野をリードする研究成果と言える。また、日本近海に生息するイシイルカに蓄積している有機塩素系化合物、有機スズ化合物、重金属類の濃度データから、日本海や太平洋の海洋汚染の状況を比較した研究は、社会的に高い関心を得ている。さらに、バイカルアザラシ、カスピカイアザラシおよび北極海のワモンアザラシに蓄積しているセシウム濃度は高く、ロシア国内における放射性核種による汚染が進行していることが明らかになり、世界の研究者から注目されている。以上のように、本研究成果は、日本国内のみならず国際社会でも評価が高い
