Research Abstract

The authors investigated SMR of COPD in Okinawa, Japan and found that the rate of SMR of COPD was higher than the national level, and Okinawa females' mortality was 1.7 to 2.0 times as high as the national level so far as COPD, although the cause remains unknown (up to now). In order to look after the risk factor of these disease, the authors carried out a questionnaire survey for the subjects of aged 55-84 years old.
This study took place with a self-administered questionnaire between February and March 2002 in Okinawa Prefecture located in most southern part of Japan. The participants were residents living in 10 urban communities and 10 rural (isolated islands) communities -a total of 5,910 residents. Questionnaires were returned from 2,160 subjects (950 men and 1,219 women), for a response rate of 36.5% (2160/5910). Subjects included provided valid responses 950(44.0%) were men and 1,210(56%) were women. Current smokers were 278, the mean of their smoking periods were 40.5 years, and ex-smokers were 518, the mean of their smoking periods was 27.6 years. COPD related symptoms were higher in people with smoking experience than in the case of ex-smokers and anti-smokers. Starting to smoke at a young age and the number of years spent smoking, seemed to be the main risk factors for COPD. Seventy-four percentage of participants replied that it was very disagreeable with the others to inhale cigarettes near. As for the cigarettes smoking, 45.8% replied very harmful in health and 47.2% replied harmful in health. Ninety percent recognized that cigarettes smoking were harmful. There was a big road or a national highway within 20m from the house of the person who replied that the air in their house or the air of the periphery of their house was not good. (P<0.001).
