Research Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop of Can-do-statements to evaluate Japanese competence in real life.
From the analysis in these three years, the following conclusions can be made about the Japanese language Can-do-statements :
1 Each item has a relatively high level of discriminability and the distribution of difficulty is generally appropriate.
2 The question items, both by skill type and in total, display a high level of reliability as an evaluation measure.
3 A high correlation coefficient was not found between the total score of the Can-do-statements and the total score of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. However, this is thought to be due to the fact that in this research we have limited the focus to examinees sitting for Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, which limited the range of ability being examined.
4 There is a high correlation coefficient between the total score of the Can-do-statements and the TGU placement test (the majority of the items in the placement test have been taken from the Japanese Language Proficiency Test).
In conclusion, although limited by being a self-evaluation method, the Japanese language Can-do-statements are a practical evaluation measure of Japanese language ability that has a high level of reliability and validity.
