| Research Abstract |
1)It was proposed that science and engineering ethics programs can be considered as a sort of values-sharing programs which has a continuous improvement process governed by the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle.
2)The implementation of an "Ethics across the Curriculum" program was examined in various aspects including concrete models, assessment and evaluation methodologies, integration into technical courses, and assessment tools for the ability of ethical value judgment
3)The results of questionnaires on values in engineering practice which were conducted mostly at various companies and organizations in nuclear industry indicated that values which Japanese engineers have are different from what engineering societies clarified in their codes of ethics, especially in terms of priority.
4)Through a survey of successful business ethics programs in place in Japan and in the US, key elements crucial to the design, implementation, and operation of a values-sharing program were extracted.
5)Educational materials for engineering ethics (a TV program consisted of fifteen 45-minute segments and an accompanying textbook) were designed and developed. (This has been broadcasted as an official course of the University of the Air, entitled "Introduction to Engineering Ethics")
6)It is concluded that in order to design and implement a successful engineering ethics program the development of assessment tools on the effectiveness of the program is crucially important Thus, various measurement tools were carefully examined and some of them such as electronic portfolios and ethics rubrics were found promising.
7)A proposal for the "Ethics Crossroads Center" which would serve as a center of excellence for the future development of science and engineering ethics was written.
