Research Abstract |
Rice straw would be easily modified by ammonia because wall polymers are associated by hydroxycinnamic acids through ether and ester bridges. Then aqueous NH_3 solution was selected as pulping liquor to develop new pulping system of rice straw. Waste liquor from conventional pulping of grasses using NaOH contains significant amount of NaSiO_2 originated from silica in grasses together with lignin, carbohydrates and NaOH. It is really difficult to treat waste liquor. New pulping process uses NH_3, waste liquor contains NH_3 together with lignin and carbohydrates. When small amount of KOH were used together with NH_3 as pulping liquor to promote pulping, the waste liquor should contain potassium, and enough properties of pulp for paper making. The waste liquor was applied as a fertilizer for maize and rice cultivations. Growth of plants was considerably promoted by the application of the waste liquor.
